Description

Antique Cast Iron Betty Lamp with Rooster finial This is a hand forged iron Betty Lamp with a rooster finial. This early betty lamp burned grease for lighting in the 1800's It is called a 'betty lamp' which comes from the word 'besser' in German (meaning better). The lamp is far superior to the rush light or splint lamp, it evolved with the addition of a cover & a wick support which ensured that any oil/grease drippings from the wick flowed back into the reservoir. The betty lamp was probably the most widely used means of lighting among people of middle or lower income until refined whale oil became common. It burned any fat or oil that was available virtually without smell or smoke, using a twisted cotton wick. Overall 10" long, the oil pot is 3.75" x 2.75" x 1". The spout stands at 1.5" high. the rooster stands 1.25" high. The lamp is in good condition! It has a nice patina. FREE SHIPPING! Any questions, please ask. We do have other Betty lamps. If interested just let us know. Reasonable offers considered. Thanks for looking!
