Please follow us on Instagram @textiletrunk ~An important Historical textile in many ways! ~ Rare & gorgeous ~ ~ I've just returned from a trip to France & this is one of my favorite finds of the trip ~ this stunning textile is an antique French quilted bed or canopy cover dating c1780-1792. A Wonderful wonderful toile! This toile is called " Hommage de l'Amerique " ( America pays homage ) & was manufactured in Nantes ~ This amazingly rare textile carries the Factory mark which was required by law in the 19th century. The original drawing of this wonderful toile is attributed to Jean-Baptiste Huet or his school & some alterations were introduced in the drawing state. The Jouy factory ( Jouy-en-Josas ) printed this toile c1783-89 & also the famous wallpaper manufacturer , Reveillon , printed this toile on paper. in this toile, America is personified in the form of a female figure accompanied by another figure holding aloft a Phrygian bonnet & a third bearing the American Flad with it's 13 stars! in the original drawing, the bear was included, however the factory at Jouy did not include this bear as the Nantes version did! ~ The factory mark is at the bottom of this wonderful quilted textile & is complete. Some of the printing was turned under & seamed for the hem, however I have removed the hand stitches to reveal the factory mark ~ This textile is printed in soft purple, pale pinks & raspberry red. This textile has faded unevenly with the bottom section being the most saturated with the most traces of the lovely purple tone ~ this texile is backed in a homespun linen & there is a light cotton batting between the layers. It is hand quilted. The sides each have a tie made from the lovely toile to secure it to the bed. This textile is a rare & important find, ideal for any important textile collection MEASUREMENTS: This lovely panel measures 51 inches wide by 82 inches long, including the 9 inch long panel of natural cotton seamed to the top . CONDITION :I have hand washed this stunning textile & it's ready to hang. There are some small holes in this textile which penetrate all layers. There is an L shaped tear in the top left of the panel. There are some small rust marks. This panel is unevenly faded with time.
