This two inch in diameter (about 5 cm) Sterling Silver brooch is typical of the Broad Band Annular Brooches that were used by Anglo Saxons during the 5th & 6th Centuries. The face of the brooch has a design formed by a combination of punch marks & wiggle work - a design made with a graver. The brooch pin is functional, but the brooch is only intended to be decorative & a display of wealth. The metal of the band is too thin to be used to close a garment.
