Purgatorio, Canto 4 Virgil Leads Dante Up The Rugged Mountainside We mounted upward through the rifted rock, & on each side the border pressed upon us, & feet & hands the ground beneath required. When we were come upon the upper rim Of the high bank, out on the open slope, "My Master," said I, "what way shall we take?" Paul Gustave Doré 1832 - 1883 was a French artist, engraver, illustrator & sculptor. Doré worked primarily with wood engraving & steel engraving. This original 8" x 10.25" reprint is from 1949. It's printed on quality paper & is in lovely condition. It's tanned just a tiny bit to a light ecru color (think vanilla ice cream) & it's blank on the reverse side. Virgil & Dante would be simply fabulous matted in a bright color & framed in either black or gold. Matted, framed, & displayed as a gallery grouping, these fabulous black & white vintage book prints are simply spectacular.
