Description

This large authentic maritime map was printed by the National Ocean Survey of the National Oceanic & Atmosphere Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce & was issued August 27, 1955. This is an authentic map of the period - it is not a reproduction, not a re-print, & not a digital print. It shows the approaches to New York & Long Island, showing Shelter Island Sound & Peconic Bays & much of Long Island Sound, as far west as Setauket & Port Jefferson Harbor, & this is Map # 1212. The map is interesting as it shows the soundings (depth) of the rivers in feet, & it shows the clearance heights of all the bridges, all of the navigational lights & structures, & temporary & permanent anchorages. This map shows parts of the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island Sound, Gardiners Bay, Shelter Island Sound, Little Peconic Bay & Great Peconic Bay. On land, the map shows the northern shore of Long Island from Gardiner's Island in the east to Setauket in the west, & on the north shore we see the Bridgeport Municipal Airport, the Housatonic River, , New Haven & the shore of Connecticut as far east as the outskirts of New London. This large map measures 45 1/2" wide by about 31" high & has been folded as you see in the photos. It is printed in color. The map is in fair condition, with some authentic vintage stains & dirt, as this was purchased from a fellow who used to sail up & down the eastern seaboard in a sailboat, & this was one of his most heavily used maps as he loved to sail around Long Island.
