Antique French Silver Plated Bronze Christian Marriage Medal This antique marriage medal, circa late 19th century - early 20th century France, is cast from bronze & plated with silver. Some of the silver plating has worn off over time revealing the base metal as shown on the photos. It measures 3 inches wide x 2 3/8 inches tall. On the front is a relief image of a man & woman standing before an altar of God as they exchange promises of a lifelong commitment of faithful love. The marriage scene with its rich details is a feast for the eyes. The hands of the characters create a dialogue between each other. Around the top is the inscription from Mark 10:9 in French: QUE L'HOmmE NE SEPARE PAS CE QUE DIEU A UNI (Let no man separate what God has united.) The medal is signed on the right side by Jean-Claude Bonnefond (1796-1860) a French painter, lithographer & sculptor noted for his portrayals of peasant life. It is also marked with the initials 'JB' (Joseph Balme) whose atelier is in Saumur, France. The reverse is blank & ready for engraving. Weight is 85 grams.
