This Jackson China #A-259 three-pint "Hall Boy" jug bears the #112 checkerboard print & a "C. Savastano" topmark. It's in incredible, just-out-of-the-carton condition, & it appears to never have done a day's work! The glaze is extremely smooth, shiny & slippery all-over, with not even the slightest suggestion of "contact" anywhere. There are a few light tan "freckles" on the handle, but these are a common occurrence in kiln firing & are not considered damage. The jug measures 6½" tall, 5" across the rim, & 5¼" across the base. The Jackson backstamp on the base was used circa 1930-46. Found in northeast Massachusetts, we have not been able to determine the exact venue in which this piece was used. There are current "Savastano" establishments in the Boston & Merrimack Valley areas, & we surmise that there may be a family connection. Of course, restaurant ware "travels" far from its home, so it might not be from the Boston area at all. Whatever "C. Savastano" was, minimum order requirements on topmarked restaurant ware suggests a sizable venue. This jug would have been produced in dozens as part of an order of thousands of pieces of tableware. Whatever its true origin, topmarked "Hall Boy" jugs in pristine condition are rare item indeed. It would be quite the "trophy" item for your restaurant ware collection!
