Description
This is an ornate, antique 1800s, etched-glass, perfume bottle with 925 sterling silver, filigree overlay attributed to "Gorham". Keep in mind I am not a silver expert & though I will describe to the best of my ability, I cannot guarantee that all information stated is absolutely correct. Therefore, please use the photos to determine the authenticity of this item to your own satisfaction. It is a 2 piece set with a handblown, ground-glass stopper. Silver is hallmarked with a small, incised stamp depicting a "Lion Passant Guardant" (lion facing right with one leg up) along with a circled letter which I cannot make out on the filigree-base bottom. The Lion mark indicates that the content is 925 sterling silver which I believe was introduced in 1544 & dropped in use in 1821. The circled letter perhaps indicates the "Assay Office" location where the silver content was certified. The silver, filigree on the bottle-neck is engraved with a letter in Old-English font which I also cannot make out. The glass bottle is square with a narrow neck & measures 3 inches wide by 7.5 inches in height including the stopper. The bottle neck opening measures 3/4 of an inch in diameter & the stopper measures 3/8 of an inch thick by 1 inch wide by 2 inches tall. The bottle itself is etched with a large, flower & fern bouquet on all four sides. The bottle is encased with a 925 sterling silver, filigree overlay featuring Victorian, male & female, figures in various vignettes surrounded by flowers & scrolls. Some figures are standing, some appear to be playing music & some are dancing the minuet. The sterling, overlay band on the bottom of the bottle is removable (easily slides off) & measures 1.5 inches in width. The bottle-neck, sterling-silver overlay is 1 3/8 inches wide & is permanent (not removable). This I must say is a rare beauty in excellent condition & would make a wonderful addition to anyone's perfume, bottle collection. Please be sure before purchasing as this item is NOT returnable.
