1755 Antiquities of Herculaneum Original copper plate etching by Giovanni Morghen Roman Fresco Neo Classical Italian An original 18th century etching from a series called Antiquities of Herculaneum Roman Fresco Notice the details included in these three panels - did you see the scorpions? Measures 19 by 14 inches. Based on a fresco in Herculaneum recovered by King Charles III of Naples & commissioned to be hung in the Royal Palace in Naples. Captioned Palmo Napolitano, Palmo Romano, which is an ancient measuring system using "palm size" Artist signature on the lower left. Engravers signature on lower right, Nolli (Giambattista) Good condition. No soiling, no folds. Herculaneum was completely buried during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79AD. Largely forgotten until 1710, some remains were found, & in 1738, the King of Naples started a systematic excavation of the area which is still ongoing though part of the area is now underneath the modern town of Ercolano. The official publication on the antiquities, which consisted of eight volumes published at Naples in Italian from 1757-92, was not offered for public sale but was intended for presentation to selected persons by Charles III , under whose aegis the excavations were undertaken. Paper slightly browned with some spotting in the margins. The detailing is exceptionally fine. Original page measures 19 by14. Pressed Image measures 12 by 9 inches Signed in plate.
