Antique Star brand cast iron plug tobacco cutter patented Jan. 20, 1885. Made by Enterprise Mfg. Philadelphia USA & so marked on the bottom. It measures 18½ inches long by 7 inches tall with the handle down & 20½ inches tall with the handle up. Still seems to function properly. These cast iron cutters were mounted on the general store counters. They would have been found on every store counter where chewing tobacco was sold. They were made to cut plugs of chewing tobacco. Plug chewing tobacco was usually sold to general stores in large strips. These cutters would further cut those strips into 1/2 oz or 1 oz. plugs. They are very collectible & they make great conversation pieces. They were used up into the 1940's or so when cellophane was introduced. More than a hundred known styles of cutter exist.
