This ticking is a vintage, European ticking fabric & dates to around 1930. The most wonderful colors of pinks & greens!! The word ticking is derived from the Latin word for case, 'Tica.' Ticking fabric was used for making mattresses, as the European bedding system of old consisted of many layers of textiles stuffed with straw & fodder at the bottom, & topped with a dense denim (ticking) for the top layers & those were stuffed with feathers. The fabric came to be known as denim, as Nimes, France was one of the great producers of this ticking fabric! This wonderful textile is a sack that was filled with down & used as a layer on a bed - because this essentially was a feather mattress, there are feathers & down remnants still clinging to the inside of this piece! It's not unusual for ticking - we see it often! - but we just want you to be aware! The fabric has a wonderfully smooth & silky feeling - it is most likely a cotton & rayon blend (rayon was actually invented in the 1800s as a substitute for silk!) This piece is definitely a collectors item - it would be gorgeous to keep as is & either hem the open side or fill with a feather insert & use as it would have been in the 19th century, or could be ideal for many decorative sewing projects! It would add a wonderful, authentic vintage look to any vintage or French interior! MEASUREMENTS: This lovely piece measures approximately 55 inches wide by 75 inches long - & of course since this is a sack, if you chose to use the fabric you could open it out & get twice that amount! CONDITION: I have left this beautiful piece in as found condition for collectors, but it can be machine washed & tumbled dry. There are still some little feathers residue clinging to the inside of the piece as explained above.
