Rare Vintage Cherry Smash Bottle Cap, Richmond, Arlington, Virginia 1960s Cherry Smash has a very interesting history. It was started in 1901 in Richmond & moved to Arlington in 1920. They took advantage of the advent of the soda fountain & this American iconic company was the #2 Soda in the Country besides Coca-Cola at the time earning the nickname "Our Nations Beverage". They even had a minor league team out of Richmond they sponsored in the early 1900s. Cherry Smash unfortunately stopped being manufactured in the 1960s. The advent of the plastic-lined cap took over at the same time. What makes these events especially interesting is the fact that Cherry Smash really concentrated on making gallon-sized containers at this time & bottling soda bottles was a fraction of their business & they soon ceased operations. None of these caps are common for bottle caps but this is one of the uncommon cases where the plastic-lined ones are rarer than the cork-lined ones.
