James Caan blazes through this masterpiece in a courageous turn as a selfish, egotistical man, from a wealthy family, who can't get out of his own way as he falls deeper & deeper into the throes of his obsession. Brilliantly directed by Karel Reisz, not a single scene rings false in "The Gambler". Like most addicts, Freed cares only about his next fix & will happily bilk his own mother out of her last dollar to roll the dice again. No one, including his girlfriend, played brilliantly by Lauren Hutton, remains untouched by his addiction as his actions spiral back to haunt him in the film's riveting final act. Many people have puzzled over the cryptic ending & it stands as a metaphor as addiction can never be fully cured & just may haunt Axel Freed forever.
