This Celestial Compass design represents each of the Four Guardians, which are significant symbols in Taoism. Each cardinal direction features the corresponding color of the guardian associated with it. The northern needle is black & represents Xuanwu (Genbu), The Black Tortoise. The eastern needle is blue & represents Qinglong (Seiryu), The Azure Dragon. The southern needle is red & represents Zhuque (Suzaku), The Vermilion Bird. The western needle is white & represents Baihu (Byakko), The White Tiger. Each of the cardinal directions, as well as the compass center (representing Qilin/Imperial Dragon) also displays the corresponding associated element, according to the Five Phases (or Wuxing) theory in Taoism: water, fire, wood, metal & earth. DETAILS Measures 1" wide. Highly polished gold metal plating. Silver glittered enamel. Soft enamel + epoxy. Includes paper backer card. GRADES Standard - These are pins without noticeable flaws or imperfections. As pins are all colored & finished by hand, each pin will vary slightly from the next. However, these are the most pristine. B Grade - These pins will have more noticeable imperfections. This could vary from missing or miscolored enamel areas, trapped dust or stray glitter, or scratches in the enamel or metal surfaces.
