Description
A rare find by Philippine artist Jose Alcantara. One of his country's most recognized carvers, his masterwork of carved panels originally done for a theatre has just been installed at the National Museum in Manila. This work of a woman & child perhaps an interpretation of the Madonna & Child is one that Alcantara has explored throughout his career & I've found several similar examples on the internet. It's signed on the bottom with stylized initials JPA in a cartouche (see last photo) & dates from later in career. The sculpture is 18" high, weighs 5 lbs 5 oz & is in excellent condition with just a few tiny nicks. Since it's wood these can be minimized & I'll leave that decision to the new owner.
