Description

Detailed ancient map of Mexico, showing the Aztec route to Mexico City, drawn by Giovanni Francesco Gemelli, reportedly drawn from original sources seen by Gemelli during his visit to Mexico in the late 17th Century. Gemelli's map is the first published representation of the legendary Aztec migration from Aztlan, a mysterious paradise somewhere to the northwest of Mexico, to Chapultepecmodern day Mexico City. Reported to have been copied from indigenous sources, the map provides a pictorial route, embracing both cartographic & spiritual elements. The various stations on the map are labeled in both Nahuatl & loose English translation. Aztlan appears in the upper right corner as a lake in which sits a mountain & a palm tree. The final destination, Chapultepec is surmounted by a giant grasshopper. On May 24, 1065 CE, the Aztecs began an a migration from their ancestral homeland, Aztlan, to the shores of Lake Texcoco, in Mexico's Central Mesa. There they founded the city of Tenochtitlan, which would be come the center of Aztec Empire. The migration, which seems to have lasted some 250 years, is comparable in scope to the biblical wanderings of the Israelites recorded in Exodus.
