(We're filling most orders in 2-5 business days. Please let us know if you have a rush request.) Heracleum maximum (Common Cow Parsnip) | Native Plant Seeds Foundation Seed - We personally collected this seed in S.W. Wisconsin & N. Illinois With large umbels of small white flowers Cow Parsnip attracts a wide variety of pollinators. These towering plants can exceed eight feet & colonies can develop when seeds drop (short-lived perennial/biennial). The plant & seeds often have a strong scent, which some claim have culinary & medicinal benefits. Like many species in the Apiaceae (Carrot) family, Cow Parsnip can cause phytophotodermatitis to bare or sensitive skin, when combined with sunlight exposure, which may result in irritation & blistering. Personally I have not had any adverse reactions to Cow Parsnip. Full sun to woods edge (full to partial sun) | wet to medium-wet soil | ht. 4-10' | Apiaceae (Carrot) family Seed packet contains 100 seeds Seeds may require 1-2 cycles of cold moist stratification (1-2 winters). This is best achieved by sowing seed outdoors in the fall. A well marked or controlled area (such as a small garden bed) will make propagation, ID & transplanting easier. NOTE: This species can be difficult or slow to grow from seed. Foundation seed, responsibly collected from native plant communities. We avoid the use of plastic packaging, instead opting for recycled paper packets, recycled mailers & waxed paper envelopes for small seeds & bare roots. The general recommended planting depth for native plant seeds is to sow the seed no deeper than the width of the seed. Planting seeds too deep will inhibit germination.
