Antique Victorian Visiting Dress 1893 Silk Taffeta 2 Piece, Museum Deaccession A regal 1893 - 1895 stunning bronze brown silk taffeta with gigot sleeve having tucks, braiding & ruching trimmed in chestnut satin ribbons. 2 piece in construction gown with large puffed sleeves. Recently de-accessioned from the Metropolitan Museum of Art historical museum collection in NYC, New York state. The bodice is decorated with bows on its high color, brown satin bows on shoulder lapels, ruching down the front accented with scalloped pointed lapels on side. The bodice is lined with a brown cotton & with 7 covered metal stays & has a front hook & eye center closures. Hand stitched as well as machine sewn. The bodice has 4 large hook supports sewn at its back to attach skirt to. The skirt has a full back sweep & a small inner side pocket. Inside the skirt are ties that gather the pleats. The skirt is trimmed in chestnut satin ribbons & closes by a small mother of pearl button closure at the back & gathers with cartilage pleats in the back for a nice fall. The skirt is lined with a brown chintz cotton lining with brown velvet dust sweep on inside hem. Condition: The outfit is in fair/good condition. A small area of seam separation at ruching on bodice. Some shredding of taffeta at top of collar. Shredding on bodice with large tears on one gigot sleeve as seen in photo. Small tears scattered about. No major discoloration or underarm stains on the bodice, but inside lining, a faint small line can be seen. No repairs. The skirt is in good condition, with one large split just above hem line. The inner lining velvet dust sweep at hem line has surface wear dirt discoloration & hem line has a very small area of wear. No repairs. Small splits on the waist band & few small splits in material scattered about. Skirt has no stains. The splitting can all be stabilized & fixed. MEASUREMENTS BODICE Bust 30", Waist 25", Puffed curved sleeve length 26-1/2", Across back: 11-1/4", Shoulder to bottom hem line: 57-1/2", Neck circumference 16".
