Description

Antique William IV Silver & Gilded Snuff Box. 1833 A stunning early snuff box, fashioned from sterling silver in 1833 during the reign of William IV, before Victoria took the throne. Amazing condition for its age. It features crisp engine turned designs to the lid & base. A floral lip to the top enables easy opening of the tight fitting lid. Ridged edges around the box contribute to a real feeling of solidity. Looking at the wear around the lid edges, it's clear this box was little used. The monogram to the lid is the crispest, most linear design I've come across. On the beautifully gilded interior, both the lid & base are hallmarked. Lid Monarch's profile - Duty stamp to show taxes had been paid. Used until 1890. TS - Makers mark for Thomas Shaw of Caroline Street, Birmingham. Lion Passant - English marker for sterling silver (925). Base Anchor - Assay office of Birmingham which verified the silver. TS - Makers mark for Thomas Shaw Letter k - date marker unique to Birmingham in 1833. Excellent condition for age. Nearing 190 years old. Ultrasonically cleaned & lightly polished. 6x3.5x1.5 cm 2.5x1.25x0.5 inches 47.4 grams Feel free to check out the rest of the shop & ask any questions.
