It is a ritual vessel, which was filled with the necessary liquid for the libation from a hole in the cervix & emptied by a second on the muzzle. Its form is identified with the main animal of the Minoan religion, the bull. His horns, not to be found, must have been Wooden & gilded, his eyes were inlaid with mountain crystal with painted Iris, the eyelids of Jasper, & the muzzle of Mother-of-Pearl. The bas-relief of the animal between the horns is rendered, while the hair on the other parts of the head is indicated by incised lines.
