French, Vintage, Dubonnet Menu Holder, Advertising, Original, Rare. G. Boano, Red Lady. This is a menu holder advertising Dubonnet, a wine-based aperitif, a blend of sweet fortified wine, herbs, spices & quinine. Dubonnet was made in 1846 by Joseph Dubonnet in response to a competition run by the French Government to find a way of persuading Foreign Legionnaires stationed in North Africa to drink quinine which is known to combat malaria but tastes very bitter, & this was the successful result.Still manufactured today & the beverage of choice of the Queen of England.
