The outer sides are painted in suitable colors & finished with three layers of glossy polyurethane varnish. Optional Handmade Checkers are made of Boxwood (Buxus Sempervirens). Slow growth of Boxwood renders the wood very hard, heavy, & with fine grain produced by growth rings, making it ideal for chess pieces & checkers. Boxwood does not contain bacteria.
