This is a charming cat part of our collection of Alebrije carvings. It is handmade by Oscar & Josefina Carrillo. Often times Oscar focuses on the carving of the figures while Josefina does the painting. Alebrijes are hand carved & painted wooden figures hailing from the state of Oaxaca in the south of Mexico. The figures are generally carved from the wood of the local Copal tree, & adeptly decorated with acrylic paints. Often entire families work together to carve & paint the figures, with each member contributing a different skill. The inspiration for these fantastical carved creatures arises from a variety of opposing yet coexisting roots, including indigenous culture, Spanish colonial influence, commercial tourism & local tradition. "Alebrijes" were featured in the 2017 Pixar movie called Coco.
