Description

For sale is a wonderful vintage Chinese porcelain happy or laughing Buddha, otherwise known as Hotei or Putai or Budai. This is a popular image in China, Hong Kong, & Taiwan; although this Buddha could have come from any of those places, we think it's Chinese. We think it was probably produced in one of the centralized factories in the People's Republic of China (PROC) era. The base is marked with impressed characters in kaisho script (which we have not been able to match to any known marks) & the number 24. There are a few good internet sites regarding production of porcelain during the People's Republic: watersilkdragon.wordpress.com/2020/02/09/a-basic-outline-of-proc-peoples-republic-of-china-base-marks-on-factory-and-other-porcelain-1949-2000/ gotheborg.com/marks/20thcenturychina.shtml This particular example was nicely decorated with a bisque head (some dirt at the top as shown in the photos) & a blue flambe glazed robe. It's a nice size at about 4.5" high by about 7" at the widest. It weighs about 2 lbs unboxed. We're happy to answer any questions or send additional photos! Please ask all questions about condition, shipping, etc., before making a purchase. Thanks for looking & check back often, as we will be adding many items to our shop over the next few weeks!
