DR WALL: John Wall (12 October 1708 - 27 June 1776), was born at Powick, Worcestershire, in 1708 - an English physician, one of the founders of the Worcester Royal Infirmary & the Royal Worcester porcelain works (then the "Worcester Tonquin Manufactory").. Porcelain production in Worcester started in 1751 & by 1755 Worcester was making the best English blue & white tea wares that money could buy. Dr John Wall perfected a recipe for porcelain that could withstand boiling water & this discovery led to the fame of the factory...He died at Bath on 27 June 1776..Because Dr. Wall left the firm in 1774 & died in 1776, "First Period" is used here to designate the years 1751 to 1783... This gorgeous, straight sided Cup & Saucer Set is hand decorated with the Royal Lily pattern in underglaze blue... Iron red edge & gilding to the edging... This set is hand-painted in the underglaze blue... King George III ordered a breakfast service in the Blue Lily pattern which was renamed 'Royal Lily' in honour of Queen Charlotte.... A breakfast service would usually include egg cups & a stand, large breakfast cups & saucers, small plates a butter tub, muffin dishes & a honey pot.... Approximate sizes: The Saucer is 1 inches tall - 4.75 inch rim diameter... The Tin shaped Cup Is 2.5 inches tall - 2.5 inches rim diameter... Marked on bottom the antique - early crescent mark...
