One can speculate about the emotion on her face, but I find this tintype of a Victorian woman just breathtaking. She has stern, hard-won features, a sadness in her eyes, & a beautiful, crisp white blouse with some type of jewelry at the blouses' closure. What I noticed after I bought this tintype, is a 'crown' of sorts, of what looks like black glass gems sitting atop her hair. She may be in mourning. I'm not sure if the crown was appropriate mourning wear, or if she just got dolled up fore this photo. But the photo is quite evocative. The rhinestone frame had been a Victorian era dress buckle & is very old. I have chosen not to attempt to polish it. I just don't think a brightly polished 'frame' would be compatible with the gravity of this photo. All the stones are present & accounted for. The decorative paper framing around this gem tintype was the framework in the photo album from which I removed this tintype. I have also included a video. I placed a thin slip of mica over the tintype to protect it. Mica is an amazing mineral whose crystals can be split, or flaked into thin elastic layers. They are translucent when thin, as in this piece of jewelry. When the piece is tilted, the mica layers can reflect the light & block the image temporarily. The video gives you an idea of how this looks. So the mottled look on the image in photos two & five is the result of the mica sheet reflecting light. I have replaced the pin back & necklace bail. When you receive this, those two items will differ from the photo here. I have also included an 18" sterling chain. The green backing is a celluloid wafer button. I work with antique & vintage parts. Some may show signs of wear or age. Please look at each picture closely. I have tried to show all aspects of my work.
