Created in 1880 during Homer's second visit to Gloucester, Massachusetts, Two Boys Watching Schooners shows two boys perched on an enormous rock, a vantage point from which they could keep an eye on the comings & goings of the fishing fleet. in this work, the artist juxtaposed the figures & shore (rendered in warm tones) with the cool blue tones of the harbor, sky & schooner. in this way, he emphasized the psychological isolation of those who waited on shore, hoping & watching for the safe return of those who made their living from the sea. Winslow Homer (1836 - 1910) was considered the most intensely American painter of his time. Best known for his marine subjects, he is considered one of the foremost painters in 19th century America & a preeminent figure in American art. Largely self-taught, Homer began his career working as a commercial illustrator. He subsequently took up oil painting & produced major studio works characterized by the weight & density he exploited from the medium. He also worked extensively in watercolor, creating a fluid & prolific oeuvre, primarily chronicling his working vacations in New England & the tropics.
