TECHNIQUE- This is a plein air painting, meaning that I paint in an outdoor location & finish in one sitting. I do this by using a painting method known as wet in wet. Starting with a thin layer, I apply more layers of paint on top of still wet paint. I can blend layers, soften edges, & even scape off paint & start again. I continue this process until the last finishing strokes of impasto. I have found that I don't usually need to travel very far to find excellent places to paint. I live near Downtown Calgary & am close to the river pathway system. Thus, all through the warm months, I load my bicycle with my painting kit & set out for a day of painting. We have two rivers in Calgary, plus three lovely creeks, so there are plenty of locales featuring water. With painting outdoors, the senses are fully engaged; one smells the air, feels the sunshine, & hears the sounds of nature & the surrounding city. The experience infuses the work with a kind of honest immediacy that is hard to get in studio landscape painting. I have been plein air painting for over forty years & still find the challenge & pleasure of it as captivating as when I first started.
