A piece of limonitic ironstone matrix covered on both sides with tiny Fluorite crystals with a little Siderite in places. The Fluorites are a greenish grey colour with whitish opaque areas. They fluoresce pale purple in daylight. The diggings at Burtree Slits are also known as the Queensberry Ironstone workings. They constitute a surface exposure of the veins that were also worked underground in the more well known Burtree Pastures & Sedling Mines. The Burtree Pasture mine is particulary historic as it dates back some 400 years to the late 16th century. By the mid to late nineteenth century it had become one of the most productive mines for lead in the whole of the Weardale. An unusual specimen from a locality not often seen for sale.
