Description

Marked Morley & Co., Majolica, Wellsville, O. This Maple Leaf American Compote which is in like new condition, was produced between 1879 to 1884 in the newly created earthenware company owned by George Morley. At the end of 1884, Morley sold out his portion of the company to his partners, who changed the name of the company to Pioneer Pottery Co. Morley then started a new pottery company in East Liverpool Ohio, which he called George Morley & Sons & was in operation until 1891. Even though, Morley only actually produced pottery for 12 years, the American Majolica market was greatly influenced by his creations, which usually included nature related subject with polychrome glaze finishes. The bright aquas, pinks, yellows & tans in his glaze have been treasured by Morley/ Majolica collectors for over a hundred years. It is rare to find a piece of Morley in such fine condition as earthen ware is a soft pottery & chips easily. The autumnal finish on the Maple Leak top has a "sponge ware look with the speckles of color. This is definitely a collectors piece! Size:4.9" tall x 9" long x 8.25" wide Vintage items naturally have some play or use wear, production imperfections, & traces of age & time. Please be sure to examine our photos thoroughly for any flaws we may have missed in the description. We considered the photos to be part of the description.
