Van Gogh did a series of two of these sunflower still life paintings. The earlier series featured the flowers sitting on the ground. The second series featured the sunflowers in a vase. This sunflower painting features a blue background which acts as a foil to the bright yellow of the sunflowers. in Van Gogh's mind both sets were linked by the name of his friend Paul Gauguin, who acquired two of the Paris versions.
