This is a Spode cake plate, made in England, from The Blue Room Collection. It is entitled 'Willow'. The pattern was introduced in 1790 & tells the story of a couple who fell in love. Her father disapproved of the match & pursued them when they ran away. Ultimately the lovers died tragically, but sympathetic gods brought them both back as doves so they could fly together eternally. (This is the Cliff Notes version of the legend.) You'll note the doves in the pattern. This cake plate is 11 1/2" in diameter, was used as a display piece only & is in perfect condition. The term 'The Blue Room Collection' came from the display room at the Spode factory where blue & white transferware was exhibited.
