Description
Dattatreya or Datta is considered by Hindus to be an incarnation of the Divine Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva. The word Datta means "Given". This beautiful depiction of Dattatreya is a lost wax masterpiece, has him in standing posture with four arms holding a lotus bud, a pasa (noose), & a water vessel (kamandalu) with his right hand in the vitarka mudra of teach & debate. The three faces Dattatreya depict Vishnu in the center, Shiva to Vishnu's left & Brahma to the right. Each of his handsome faces has a slight, impersonal smile as if he smile is directed inward rather than out into the world. Above his two eyes between his brow is his 3rd eye which when he opens it emits a powerful beam destroying what is in its path. His head dress design is called a Kirita Makutam, a head dress in the shape of a large puja bell. The detail of the carvings are amazing. The throne portion of this statue is magnificent! The arch is surrounded by beautiful flame-like emitting from each angle. Provenance : Ex-Private Javanese Collection, collected in Central Java, Indonesia.
