The sign incorporates a 1949-specification California Department of Public Works, Division of Highways route marker with extra bright white dots on the numerals to simulate the old style Stimsonite reflectors. The sign can be made as a faithfully scaled remake of the original 24 x 30 inch sign or in a more displayable 16 x 20 inch size. It is made of heavy gauge steel. US route 99 may very well be the most important highway in California, surpassing even route 66 in historical value. Known as the Main Street of California, this highway began at Calexico & headed to Los Angeles, Bakersfield, Fresno, Sacramento, Red Bluff & beyond - past Mount Shasta & into Oregon & Washington before finally terminating at the Canadian border.
