Yemen has a rich & fertile gulf coast once with high traffic due to the coffee & frankincense trade. But much of the country that stretches toward the interior has become an impassable desert known as The Empty Quarter. But the Bedouins know the way from oasis to oasis around the fringe of the ocean of sand & more sand. The finger of one of those Bedouin women once wore this flat cut brilliant red glass gem in her belled silver ring - probably more than one generation of Yemen Bedouin women wore it. in the olden times & to some degree, even today, finger rings are worn on specific fingers & often had amuletic or symbolic value, much like the western tradition of the wedding ring. Such large finger rings as this became fashionable in the Hellenistic period, 3 BC, which include stones larger than the finger. Another characteristic of the Bedouin ring is to have the decoration on both shank & shoulders, giving them an ornateness similar to Roman rings. Present day Bedouin women display a similar fondness for this imposing style of ring. This ring is made of silver alloy, decorated with fine twisted metal filigreed rope on the shank & shoulders, on a hammered patterned band. The red glass setting is very angular/clawed & boldly attractive. The corners are set with bells. The red stoned ring is often called fatkhah.
