Originally part of a larger piece, possibly a stomacher brooch or collar necklace, we found this wonderful example of late 18th century gem paste as a solitary drop. It's rare to find paste created in gem colors other than the clear meant to copy diamonds, here it emulates the swirling, richly veined matrix of green agate, expertly set in its 10k rose gold cut-down collet tear-drop cup, topped by a bow engraved with a grosgrain pattern, a tiny blossom at the knot. Measuring approximately 1 1/8" total length including bow, & 5/8" at the widest. Hung from a 17 1/2" long antique 10k gold cable chain. Paste is essentially a type of leaded glass developed in the 18th century initially as an alternative to higher priced diamonds & gemstones. It evolved to become popular in its own right & was sometimes used to achieve rich color effects in designs such as this drop. in excellent antique condition with some light wear & slight softening of the details. Not marked for gold content but acid tests to 10k, the chain is marked 10k on the clasp.
