Jute is a sustainable plant fiber that grows in northeast India without the use of fertilizers or pesticides. Kalamkari is a traditional art of fabric printing using vegetable dyes. The printing is done from wooden blocks chiseled from teak wood by master craftsmen. This complex & highly skilled art of printing fabric is practiced by few artisan communities in India. Pomegranate peel, iron scrap, turmeric, jaggery, salt, etc. are used to make the vegetable dyes. Cotton fabric is initially soaked in myrobalan (purple leaf plum) to make it receptive to natural dyes. After printing each color, the fabric is boiled with leaves, flowers, tree bark & sun-dried to resume further printing. After the last print, the fabric is finally washed in river streams. The speed & depth of the water determine the brightness of the colors. The fabric is then sun-dried & ready to be used. Small smudges & other minor Imperfections are normal & a testimony to the fact that the printing is entirely done by hand.
