Cunning folk are the herbal folk healers whose knowledge was passed down through generations or learned through exploration of the nearby field & forests. They performed an invaluable service to villages, particularly for the poorer souls or people who did not live close to physicians, & were widely revered & trusted - albeit often feared - by their communities. Names given to folk healers include: the French devins-guérisseurs (soothsayer-healers) & leveurs de sorts (curse-lifters) the Italian benandanti ("good walkers") the Dutch toverdokters or duivelbanners the German Hexenmeister or Kräuterhexen the Irish bean feasa ("woman of knowledge"), banfháidh or fáidhbhean ("female seer")[ the Spanish curanderos the Portuguese curandeiros/as, benzedeiros/as or mulheres de virtude (this last one applies only to females, translating as "women of virtue") the Danish kloge folk[3] the Swedish klok gumma ("wise old woman") or klok gubbe ("wise old man") The Appalachians - Granny WItches Brita Biörn was a well-known Scandinavian cunning woman. & while it is not believed that Scandinavia persecuted people for witchcraft, they were often brought before the courts for superstition. Brita was accused by the parish vicar of Gothem, Niclas Lutteman, in 1722. Before court, she claimed to have been taken & taught by the little people in the underworld, making this visit only in her soul, while her body was left in the bed. The court considered her tale to be a Satanic illusion or a symptom of insanity, & sentenced her to eight days on water & bread. She was banned from her work as a cunning woman & the vicar's assistants kept her cottage under watch. The verdict only served to make her more widely known as a cunning woman, & the vicar complained that many people travelled to her for her help & trusted her as if she was a deity. in this image, she is in her modest cottage, surrounded by jars & bottles & herbs, infused with the golden light of healing & praying over a candle for the soul of the world. As an aside - many Norwegian & practitioners of folk magic & medicine would have a copy of the "Svartebok" (or "black book"), a magical tome that acted as a repository for charms & healing rituals. A spell from this formulary, printed on parchment, with instructions in English, will be included with the purchase of this print, as testimony & in honor of all healers & those in the medical profession, & as thanks for the work that they perform in this realm. This work is featured in The Spellcasting Oracle" as the card "Healing", published by Hay House, Inc. 2019 This listing is for one limited release 8x10 art print,
