The Shield has been constructed from 18 Gauge Mild Steel with hand painted Roman markings in red & gold. The center Boss of the shield is polished Solid Steel which is welded on by six bolts. It's very strong & sturdy. Many low price similar items on the market are made of soft steels & the boss can be dented easily. The handle of the Scutum is metal, secured by a thick steel band. The umbo (boss) is made if 16G steel. All steel & iron parts can oxidize so oiling & regular cleaning should be done to prevent rusting.
