Description
The Episcia is easy to care for & when done properly the plant will bloom almost all year. Even when not blooming, the plant still provides leaves that are beautiful in color & texture. Episcia do not like soggy soil but thrive best in humid conditions with bright eastern/northeastern light. Avoid direct sunlight. Use soil that is a mix of two parts peat moss, half part vermiculite or perlite & half-part sand. This allows for good moisture content with adequate drainage. The plant should do well & bloom if allowed to receive 12 to 14 hours of bright or fluorescent light. If using artificial light, keep the light about 14 inches from the rim of the pot. A temperature around 72/75 degrees is ideal. If the air is too dry, set the pot on a tray with pebbles (clay pebbles work well) & water. The pebbles will keep the pot above the water line but will help add humidity. Allow soil to dry out to about 1/4" in depth. Water with room temperature filtered or distilled water. Avoid cold water. Ideally avoid tap water as fluoride & chlorine that may be present may affect plants. Fertilize twice a month with 1/4 - 1/2 doses. Re-pot once a year with fresh soil or when the roots are the shape of the pot. Then re-pot to a bigger pot.
