Celebrate the Century - 1940's Issued in 1999 The fifth set in the Celebrate the Century series, prepared for the Millennium celebration, honors people & events prominent in the decade 1940-49 of the 20th century. There were 10 sheets, one for each decade, with 15 stamps on each sheet for a total of 150 different stamps. Each stamp only appeared once on each sheet. Post-war baby boom Returning World War II servicemen began families, which led to a dramatic increase in new children between 1946-1964 in the United States. That increase is known as the "Baby Boom." That boom accounted for some 79 million babies. Average number of births in the United States averaged about 2.5 million. The number was 300,000 greater in 1946 & up to 4.3 million in 1957.
