Original Medium: Silk, pigment paints & ink Japanese Prints Hibiscus & a Pair of Chickens, c. 1760 Ito Jakuchu (1716-1800) Itō Jakuchū was an eccentric Japanese painter of the mid-Edo period (1757-1767). Though many of his paintings concern traditionally Japanese subjects, particularly chickens & other birds, his painting style & methods were heavily influenced by Western painting. Most of Jakuchū's works were in the form of hanging scrolls, painted in a combination of Western & traditional Japanese methods & styles. A very common theme among his work is birds, in particular chickens & roosters, though several of his more famous paintings depict cockatoos, parrots, & phoenixes. One of his most ambitious & famous works, of which this is one, is known as the "Pictures of the Colorful Realm of Living Beings" . Begun around 1757 & not finished until 1765, the Pictures are a set of thirty hanging scrolls created as a personal offering to the Shōkoku-ji temple.
