1896 Antique French Silver Fourteenth Centenary of the Baptism of Clovis Hand-Engraved Medal | Déposé This exquisitely detailed antique medal is a souvenir of the the Fourteenth Centenary of the Baptism of Clovis. One side features an engraved depiction of Clovis, king of the Franks, who on the on Christmas Day, 496 converted to Catholicism at the instigation of his wife, Clotilde, a Burgundian princess who was a Catholic in spite of the Arianism that surrounded her at court. Clovis was baptized in a small church in the vicinity of the subsequent Abbey of Saint-Remi in Reims. Engraving on the verso reads "Jubile 496-1896 Reims." The medal is crafted in French silver (hallmarked on the suspension ring) & measures 1 3/8 inches wide x 1 1/2 inches tall not including the suspension ring. It is marked "Déposé" on the right edge of the medal. Déposé is a design patent, registered mark, or the French legal equivalent at the time. It means that the maker is signaling that it has a registered a (limited-duration) monopoly on the design. Most of my items ship free!
