More than 20 Black newspapers were published in the U.S. before the Civil War. & between the end of the Civil War & the turn of the century, over 500 Black newspapers began publication. The Chicago Defender, was the first black newspaper to have a circulation over 100,000, the first to have a health column, & the first to have a full page of comic strips.
