This is a rare 1940 desk set celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Pony Express. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt & Postmaster General James Farley are featured on a metal plaque along with the logo of the Pony Express. The walnut base is nicely engraved & gold inset with 'Vernon Peiffer Postmaster Cripple Creek Colo.'. Very few of these exist & it is extremely rare to come across these desk sets engraved with local postmaster names on them. The desk set include one fountain pen holder & a fountain pen, also engraved with Vernon Peiffer's name. The other fountain pen holder & pen is missing. Vernon Peiffer homesteaded in Cripple Creek, Colorado in the 1890's. He was County Senator from 1928-1932, then served as Postmaster of Cripple Creek from 1936-1950. He started the Peiffer Bottling Works & also was a soda & ice cream business owner. This is a great piece of Gold Rush, Pony Express, & U.S. political history!
