Description

This gorgeous textile measures 23 - inches wide by 76-inches long, plus fringe. Mayan symbols of grains of corn, fish, & ducks are woven into the rebozo to tell the story of Lago Atitlán. It was dyed with basil, indigo, & wild indigo. This rebozo was woven from rayon. It was woven on a back strap loom in the highlands of Guatemala. It could used as a table runner. It could be cut & made into stunning pillow covers. It is very beautiful. The thread was hand dyed by the weaving cooperative in San Juan La Laguna. The textile itself was woven by an association of women called Voz de los Tz'utujiles. The last picture is of a talented weaver using a backstrap loom. This textile was made on a back strap loom. A woman fits the strap of the loom around her waist & leans back to stretch it taunt. It's not an easy task. I have tried weaving on one several times & have come to understand the technique & physical endurance that it entails. I have so much respect for the weavers! The last picture is of some of the ladies in the cooperative that wove this beautiful textile. Check out more great Guatemalan fabrics in my etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/spanglishfabrics.
