Celebrate the Century - 1930's Issued in 1998 The fourth set in the Celebrate the Century series, prepared for the Millennium celebration, honors people & events prominent in the decade 1930-39 of the 20th century. There were 10 sheets, one for each decade, with 15 stamps on each sheet for a total of 150 different stamps. Each stamp only appeared once on each sheet. Franklin D. Roosevelt Soon after leaving college, starting work for a New York law firm, & marrying, Franklin D. Roosevelt decided on a career in politics. His first opportunity came in 1910, when he was elected to the state senate. His leadership of upstate New York Democrats in a fight against Tammany Hall enhanced his stature nationally. in 1912, after strongly backing Woodrow Wilson through intra-party struggles,Roosevelt was named assistant secretary of the navy. in 1920 he won the Democratic nomination for vice president, with the ticket losing to Harding's campaign. The following year, while vacationing at his summer home in Canada, he was stricken with polio.
