The Freedom's Journal, the first African American newspaper in the U.S. The North Star, abolitionist Frederick Douglass' newspaper The L'Union, the South's first African American newspaper The California Eagle, the West's oldest African-American newspaper 1827 - 1879 More than 20 Black newspapers were published in the U.S. before the Civil War. & between the end of the Civil War & the turn of the century, over 500 Black newspapers began publication.
