You are looking at a one-of-a-kind walking stick! This is a hand-sculpted ornamental staff is perfect for taking on a hike through mountain trails or showing off at a tailgate party. Over the course of several days, I follow a multi-step process to shape clay into the figurine you see in the pictures. I then fuse a sturdy piece of stained local timber with the sculpture to create a durable, highly functional piece of art. These walking staffs are meant to be used in the wild! Because I hand finish each piece, they are each one-of-a-kind. I make every walking stick by hand at my wood shop outside of Pittsburgh, PA. I source my lumber locally & use trees that can be readily found in the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania, West Virginia & Ohio. I generally follow the same basic steps for creating each walking stick, though the end result is one-of-a-kind thanks to the unique & varied nature of the lumber I use. Step One: The whole process starts with a single block of wood measuring two inches thick, two inches wide & about seven feet long. Step Two: I smooth out the edges & refining the details of the design. Removing the grit & splinters from the rough hew gives the stick its final shape. Step Three: I sand the walking stick until it's smooth to the touch. I make three sanding passes with different grit sandpaper. Step Four: I apply stain to accentuate the natural beauty of the wood. Stain helps to highlight the wood grain, knots & natural beauty of the walking stick Step Five: I add two coats of clear coat polyurethane, which protects & preserves the walking stick Step Six: Finally, I add a rubber stopper to the bottom of the staff so that it can be used indoors as well as on the trail. I make each order custom. Feel free to request a specific height for your staff. Otherwise, the standard height is between 32"-72".
