Joseph Prestele was a botanical/agricultural/horticultural artist from a family of botanical artists. He contributed to the documentation of fruits & flowers through his lithographic artwork in a time when accurate color reproductions for publications were expensive, difficult, & rare. He was a renowned lithographer using stone engraving & taught his sons Joseph Junior & William his craft of stone engraving lithography, watercolors, chromolithography, & variations of stone lithography. Joseph Prestele & his two sons enjoyed international recognition for their precise renderings of plants & fruit, which remain as fresh to this day as when they were first painted in the mid to late 1800s.
